Tailhook. A tailhook is a metal hook installed on the tail of an aircraft. It's purpose is to come into contact with steel cables that are installed on the deck of an aircraft carrier, during landing. The tailhook snags the cables, and the cables then drag the aircraft to a stop. The cables (which are called arresting cables) are necessary because the brakes on the aircraft's wheels are not powerful enough to make the aircraft slow down and stop.
