X-Prize. The X-Prize was a prize awarded by an organization called the X-Prize Foundation. The prize was awarded to anyone who could put a rocket into space (this applied to privately-sponsored rockets, not rockets sponsored by government space agencies). The prize is a ten-million dollar prize. To win the prize, your rocket had to reach an altitude of at least 100 kilometers (that's about 62 miles), and it can't be a one-shot stunt, you have to do it at least twice in a two-week period. The two-week time limit means your rocket has to be reusable, or at least it has to be refurbished, so it's ready for another launch in two weeks.

On October 4, 2002, the X-Prize was awarded to a company called Scaled Composites, for a vehicle they called 'Space Ship One'.
